Goggins, a World Snooker Tour professional between 2004 and 2009, came through a field of 33 hopefuls which included 2018 World Seniors champion Aaron Canavan to book his place at snooker’s most iconic venue.

The 45-year-old got his weekend off to a strong start with back-to-back whitewash victories over Kieran O’Donovan and fellow Irishman Tony Corrigan.

In the quarter-finals he met Gary Filtness, who lifted the Super Seniors title in Jersey, and the Englishman twice moved ahead in the best-of-seven frame contest – including firing in an impressive 112 break in the third. Goggins ultimately proved too strong, however, and took the contest 4-2 to set up a last four meeting with Gary Britton.

Britton had already eliminated former champion Canavan at the last sixteen stage, and was looking to claim another scalp as he fought back from 2-0 down to level the contest after four frames.

Goggins was in fine form, however, having opened up the match with a stunning 128 break and eventually battled through a 4-2 victor to reach the title match.

There he met Howe, who had beaten John Leahy, David Brock, Simon Dent and Wayne Townsend to reach the final, but proved no match for Goggins as the experienced Irishman took the title with a comfortable 4-0 victory.

Back-To-Back Super Seniors Glory For Gary Filtness

Gary Filtness followed up his recent Super Seniors victory in Ireland with further success in Jersey, as he defeated Simon Dent 2-0 in the final to claim the title.

Filtness, who lost out to eventual champion Rodney Goggins in the qualifying event, defeated former professional Andrew Norman 2-0 in his opening match of the Super Seniors and dropped just a single frame en route to the final as he later overcame Raymond Grall and Tony Corrigan.

His opponent in the title match was Dent, who had beaten John Leahy, John Hunter and Karl Townsend to reach the final.

Filtness proved too strong, however, as breaks of 58 and 72 secured the title for the 60-year-old.

The experienced cueman from Norwich – who has previously played at snooker’s most iconic venue in both the professional and seniors world championships – joins last month’s event one winner Andrew Norman on the list of confirmed qualifiers. 

Held at the North East Snooker Centre in North Sheilds, 53-year-old Pinches began his campaign with victories against Ant Parsons (3-0) and Gareth Edwards (3-1) before he defeated multiple-time World Seniors Snooker Tour major event finalist Johnathan Bagley 4-1 in the last eight along with breaks of 90 and 81. 

In the semi-finals Pinches went behind early on to opponent James McGouran but he strung together the next four frames for a 4-1 win.

Coming through the other side of the draw was 2022 world seniors champion Walker. The Welshman recovered from 2-0 down to deny former qualifier Rodney Goggins 4-2 in the quarter-finals and then registered runs of 126 – the highest break of the event – and 78 during a 4-0 success against 2018 champion Aaron Canavan in the last four. 

A decorated final did not disappoint. Walker deposited the opening frame with a 103 clearance although Pinches responded with efforts of 87, 83 and 68 in the next three frames as he went 3-1 up. Professional PTC event winner Pinches then claimed a low-scoring fifth frame to complete victory and book a ticket to Sheffield for the spring. 

The third qualifying event of the season is set to take place across the Irish Sea at the Snooker & Billiards Ireland Academy in Carlow between February 23-25.

A former professional player of 12 seasons, Norman agonisingly missed out on the Crucible Theatre main event last season when he lost to Peter Lines in the final of qualifying event four. However, after an intriguing long weekend where he showed his class, Norman made sure that his name will be the draw this time around. 

The 43-year-old began his campaign with 3-1 victories against Michael Judge and Ant Parsons in the last 32 and 16 respectively to make it through to Sunday’s last eight. 

The 2022 English Seniors Snooker Champion recovered from 2-0 down as he defeated Dharminder Lilly 4-2 (77 break, frame six) in the quarter-finals before denying two-time Crucible qualifier for this event Stuart Watson 4-1 in the last four. 

Coming through the other side of the draw was Hancorn, who was trying to repeat the feat of winning the opening qualifier of the season, which he did last year on his debut. The former English Amateur Snooker Champion eventually went all the way to the semi-finals at the Crucible. 

Hancorn survived deciding frames against Neal Jones and Patrick Wallace before returning for Finals Day where he eliminated Rodney Goggins 4-2 and then Gerard Greene 4-1 in the semi-finals during a display in which he compiled breaks of 76, 62 and 52. 

In the final Hancorn established a 2-0 advantage, but Norman responded as he levelled at 2-2. Hancorn went back in front and one away from victory although Norman recovered again, hitting a 59 break on his way to forcing a seventh and final frame which he emerged from. 

Brilliant Beal Secures Super Seniors Success 

In the opening Super Seniors event of the campaign, Ashley Beal defeated John Hunter 2-1 in the final. 

It means back-to-back event titles for Beal who also won last season’s final event. 

The former English Over-55 Snooker Champion won three consecutive deciding frame matches – against Simon Brooks, Patsy Fagan, and then Hunter.
