One point is awarded for each frame won at an event and, should the same players sit in the top two of both rankings lists, then the official world rankings would take priority.

CANAVAN CONFIRMS CRUCIBLE SPOT

Aaron Canavan has guaranteed his place at the top of the official two-year WSS ranking list after winning the event eight title in Reading.

The former World Seniors champion, who finished as runner-up to Alfie Burden at the Crucible Theatre last year, has therefore confirmed his return to snooker’s most iconic venue in May.

In second place is Northern Ireland’s Gerard Greene, who has won four titles this season and is favourite to secure the other qualifying position via the two-year ranking list.

Greene holds a 21-point advantage over third-placed Wayne Townsend, who is aiming for a second Crucible appearance, while the top five is completed by Dharminder Lilly and the already qualified Burden.

GREENE IN POLL POSITION

Gerard Greene has maintained his position at the summit of the one-year ‘Race to the Crucible’ ranking list after reaching a sixth consecutive final in Reading.

Greene and Jersey’s Aaron Canavan holds the top two positions, just as they do in the two-year ranking list, with 14 points separating the two.

Wayne Townsend remains in third, 25 points behind second-placed Canavan, while Stuart Watson and Matthew Ford lead the chasing pack.

The remainder of the top ten is made up of Neal Jones, Philip Williams, Daniel Ward and Neil Craycraft.

HUNTER MAINTAINS LEAD

John Hunter remains at the top of the Super Seniors ranking list after securing another title at The Crucible Club in Reading.

He now holds a 15 point advantage over second placed David Brock, while Neil Carroll holds third position.

The rest of the top ten sees Dennis Tristram, Andrew Barrett, Mark Evans, Wayne Martin, Andrew Norman, John Rees and Kevin Wilshere.

World Seniors Snooker (WSS) is delighted to announce the return of the Seniors of Sheffield Day during the World Seniors Snooker Championship on Thursday 7 May.

The day will see WSS once again partnering with Age UK Sheffield to bring 500 local residents from the aging population in the city to the iconic Crucible Theatre to watch the action live, meet legends of the sport and socialise with each other.

The number of over 50’s experiencing loneliness is set to reach two million by 2025/26. This compares to around 1.4 million in 2016/17 – a 49% increase in ten years, and Age UK reported in 2016 that there are 1.2 million chronically lonely older people in the UK.

Jason Francis, Chairman of WSS and creator of the initiative, said: “According to our partners Age UK, half-a-million older people go at least five or six days a week without seeing or speaking to anyone at all. Loneliness, living alone and poor social connections is hugely detrimental to people’s health and this will be our fourth year of holding this heart-warming event for the people of Sheffield.”

Rohit Sagoo, WSS Director, said: “It is about getting those who are in the aging population in Sheffield out of their seats and out of their homes to come and watch some snooker at the Crucible Theatre.”

John Parrott, 1991 world champion, said: “It is a brilliant idea, everyone is excited to see the snooker and meet some of the legends. It is a wonderful initiative for the event and the city!”

Clive Timothy from Age UK Sheffield said: “We are thrilled to continue our support of World Seniors Snooker for the Seniors of Sheffield Day. Events like this play a vital role in helping older people stay connected, active, and engaged with their community. The opportunity to meet new people and experience live snooker is invaluable in tackling loneliness and supporting wellbeing in Sheffield’s older population.”

By lifting the title, the 2018 World Seniors Snooker (WSS) champion has guaranteed that he will finish first on the official two-year ranking list at the end of the campaign and has therefore qualified for the 2026 edition of the flagship event at the Crucible Theatre in May.

Canavan, from Jersey, denied Greene a fifth title of the series but the former professional from Northern Ireland still looks likely to join him in qualifying for the sport’s most iconic venue.

Forty-two players contested the two-day event and Canavan reached the concluding day of action by defeating Stephen Groves (4-2) and Ian Rose (4-0).

He began the Sunday by overcoming Dean Galbally 4-1 before a top break of 100 saw Canavan beat Steve Crowley 4-2 to set up a title match meeting with Greene.

Greene had made it to a sixth successive World Seniors Tour event final by last downing Matthew Ford 4-1 and only losing a single frame en route.

Canavan was competing in his second final of the season, having made it to at least the quarter-finals of all but one of the previous seven events, and his consistency was finally rewarded as contributions of 61 and 76 saw him get over the line and secure the title.

Hunter Goes Back-To-Back

John Hunter beat David Brock 2-0 to win a second consecutive Super Seniors title at The Crucible Club in Reading.

Results

It marked a third title of the season for Hunter, who is ranked first in the Super Seniors ranking list, as he came through a field of 23 players aged 55 and over on Sunday.

He dropped just a single frame en route to the final as he defeated Paul Smith (2-0), Wayne Martin (2-1) and Mark Evans (2-0).

There he faced Brock, who had won through consecutive deciders against Mark Thomas, Brian Sharpe and Andrew Barrett to reach the title match.

Hunter once again proved too strong, however, and a top break of 36 helped him to secure the crown.

The ninth and final World Seniors Tour event of the season takes place on 3-5 April and entries are open via WPBSA SnookerScores.
